Description
1868 Shield NickelRPD "Repunched Date"
PCGS XF45
A sharp, attractive Repunched Date, showing mostly on the 1. Interestingly, the other three digits were punched too shallowly into the die and come up in very low relief. There are many neat varieties for 1868. Crusty and original, with sharp strike and hints of frost under he toning. This variety is not pictured in the Cherrypicker's Guide, so PCGS will only list it on the slab as a Minor Variety. However, that does not mean the variety is of minor significance. The CPG is not a comprehensive reference. In fact, the authors use up valuable real-estate, right there in the 1868 nickel section, to say: "Don't get hung up on just the varieties listed in this book. There are many nice, yet-to-be-discovered 'cherries' out there waiting for you to pick!" This is one of those cherries!
A frosty piece for the grade, with minimal wear and just a few toning speckles on the reverse. Otherwise, it is golden white in complexion. Sharp, original, and pleasing.
