1880 Shield Nickel, Superb Gem Proof, certified PCGS/CAC PR-67.
Breen-2516, "Dropped 8".  This Obverse die was also used to strike the acknowledged Business strike coinage, when paired with the "Island Reverse" for that purpose.  Breen called this die "rare" although I think it a bit more common than that (call it "scarce" if nothing else).  "Common" in Shield Nickel terms as a date in Proof, however not looking like this.  Rare air with only 16 PCGS/30 NGC in the grade, with only 1 PCGS non-Cameo finer (67+), plus about 30 at each of the services with Cameo contrast equal or finer.  Not a lot at CAC either, 10 non-Cam plus 12 Cameo.  A very original, non-dipped example that does display a hint of light Cameo contrast.  No PCGS auctions since 2013 to go by, so priced based upon my own opinion of potential value.
As for the price listed here, unfortunately you can thank ebay’s new higher fee regime which is costing me 12%+; I am more than happy to sell for less under different circumstances.
